GEEK PICK: Super Smash Bros. Nintendo GameCube Controller

Stay on target

Hey! There’s a new Super Smash Bros. game coming out for Nintendo Switch! Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is just months away, but as Nintendo reveals more details about the upcoming mega mascot crossover we just can’t contain our excitement. A few days ago a blowout Nintendo Direct dropped new bombs like playable Simon Belmont and King K. Rool, morphing stages and charging Final Smashes, nearly a thousand songs, and of course the long-awaited death of Luigi. December can’t get here fast enough.

Like any fighting game fandom though, Smash players are very particular about their controllers. Instead of using arcade sticks though the weapon of choice is still the Nintendo GameCube controller from the hardcore Super Smash Bros. Melee days. Fortunately, everyone and everything is here in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, including the Nintendo GameCube Controller.

Aside the Nintendo 64 original and portable 3DS version, every version of Smash Bros. has been compatible with the GameCube controller. The GameCube and Wii had built-in ports for it. Nintendo sold a special Smash Bros.-branded GameCube adapter for the Wii U that’s also compatible with and will be re-released for Switch. The dedication is admirable, if baffling considering the Pro Controller basically has all of the same buttons.

But Smash fans won’t accept anything less. And to help support the scene Nintendo also even made new GameCube controllers to replace the ones that just got busted from intense matches. We technically haven’t gotten our hands on this new model releasing alongside Super Smash Bros. Ultimate this December, but we do have fond memories of what a brand new GameCube controller feels like and this looks right on the money.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launches December 7. Some territories are even getting a special bundle packaging the game with the GameCube controller and adapter. But regardless of how you get it, if you want to stay competitive in the game where Luigi’s soul gets slashed out of his body by Dracula’s servant Death, this is the controller you need.
